By Brian Treanor, SYRA

Mass Youth Soccer and the Massachusetts State Referee Committee are proud to announce the recipients of the 2007 Young Referee of the Year award.

This award is given each year to an outstanding young male and female referee in recognition of their abilities as a referee on the field, and their service to the community off the field.

This year’s recipients of the award are:

Meaghan Heinz, 18, of Medford
Igor Senic, 18, of Stoughton

Chris Trinkaus-RandallnMeaghan Heinz

Meaghan has had quite a career as a referee in the time that she has been a referee. Since becoming a Grade 8 in 2003 Meaghan has earned the respect of her peers and of the soccer community alike. Meaghan was honored in 2003 as the Middlesex League Commissioner′s Cup Young Female Referee of the Tournament. The next year she followed up that honor by winning the Middlesex League Young Referee Of The Year award. In 2006, Meaghan put another feather in her cap by capturing the Needham Tournament Outstanding Young Referee Of The Tournament Award. Meagan′s refereeing accomplishments include: attendance at several out of state tournaments including the WAGS tournament, several appearances at the Massachusetts State Cup, MTOC, and working as an assistant referee during the Eastern Mass Women′s Soccer League finals. Meaghan is also active in her community working as a volunteer for the MASSPIRG Student Chapters and the Special Olympics. Meaghan is also quite an athlete and played for Medford High JV soccer team where she served as the team captain.

Chris Trinkaus-RandallnIgor Senic

Igor has been widely recognized, by all that have seen him work, as a referee who is well beyond his eighteen years. Igor became a Grade 8 referee in 2004 and has taken on the task of being a soccer referee with vigor. In his first year as a referee Igor jumped right in to the fray as an assistant referee on an Over The Hill Soccer League match! Igor has also taken on many other challenging assignments in the BSSL, MAPLE, The Northeast Premier League, Super Y, and the Independent Schools League. Igor has also appeared as a referee at several tournaments including the Massachusetts State Cup and the Needham Memorial Day Tournament. Igor was honored by the Needham Tournament as its Outstanding Young Referee. When Igor is not blowing the whistle as a referee he is also an accomplished soccer player for Stoughton High School and select teams. Igor also takes part in other school activities and is an active member of the Stoughton High School Chess Club.

Winning the Massachusetts Young Referee of the Year award carries with it the responsibility of representing the state at the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series Region One Tournament being held this summer in Portland, ME. In addition, both Meaghan and Igor will be honored at several other events throughout the course of the year.

Please join us in congratulating both of these fine young referees on their accomplishments!
