Referee world mourns passing of Albert Lopes

Albert Lopes, Jr. of Peabody passed away early on Monday, November 12 from complications with cancer. Prior to his passing, Al was one of the oldest active referees at the age of 83.

Al was well known throughout the referee community and beyond. He first picked up the whistle in 1989, and rose through the ranks to become a grade 5 official. He was also an active assessor for over ten years, helping to pass along his knowledge to those fortunate enough to come in contact with him.

Al's legacy goes well beyond just refereeing. Founder of the Peabody CLC Soccer Club, he coached and managed the team for more than 40 years! He was also instrumental in starting the soccer program at Salem State College. In 2003 Al was inducted into the MASS Soccer Hall of Fame.

Few who have ever met Al Lopes ever came away without a strong impression of someone devoted to the game of soccer. His passion will live on in everyone he touched.
